Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, and Waste Management (WASH)

At OGGEV, we recognize that access to clean water, proper sanitation, and effective waste management is fundamental to public health, community well-being, and environmental sustainability. Many communities in Uganda face water scarcity, poor sanitation, and waste pollution, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and environmental degradation.

Through our WASH initiatives, we empower communities with sustainable solutions that enhance water access, hygiene practices, and eco-friendly waste management, ensuring a healthier and more resilient future.

Our key initiatives in WASH

1. Developing rainwater harvesting systems & affordable water filtration

Many rural and peri-urban communities lack access to safe drinking water, leading to widespread illnesses. To address this, OGGEV:
Installs rainwater harvesting systems to capture and store clean water for household and agricultural use
Provides low-cost water filtration solutions to remove contaminants and improve water quality
Constructs boreholes and rehabilitates existing wells to expand access to safe drinking water
Trains communities on water conservation and sustainable usage

With safe and accessible water sources, families reduce health risks and improve overall well-being.

2. Promoting hygiene & sanitation awareness

Poor hygiene and inadequate sanitation contribute to disease outbreaks and high child mortality rates. OGGEV works to:
Build and improve latrines and sanitation facilities in schools, markets, and villages
Educate communities on handwashing, menstrual hygiene, and personal cleanliness
Distribute hygiene kits, including soap, sanitary pads, and water treatment supplies
Work with schools to implement hygiene education programs for children

By promoting safe sanitation practices and hygiene education, we help prevent diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.

3. Composting & recycling for Waste management

Unmanaged waste leads to pollution, health hazards, and environmental damage. To tackle this, OGGEV:
Encourages composting organic waste to enrich soils and reduce landfill waste
Promotes recycling programs to manage plastic, paper, and metal waste
Introduces community waste collection and sorting initiatives
Partners with local businesses to create jobs in waste-to-energy and upcycling projects

Through innovative waste management solutions, we reduce pollution, improve sanitation, and create economic opportunities.

4. Sustainable drainage & flood control

Flooding and poor drainage systems lead to water contamination and infrastructure damage. To mitigate these risks, OGGEV:
Constructs sustainable drainage systems to prevent water stagnation and flooding
Implements natural water filtration solutions, such as wetlands and bio-swales
Trains communities in flood prevention strategies and emergency response

By managing water effectively, we help communities adapt to climate challenges and protect their environments.
