Uganda’s vast freshwater resources, particularly in Jinja, where the Nile River begins its journey, present immense potential for sustainable aquaculture. However, traditional fishing practices, overfishing, and environmental degradation threaten aquatic ecosystems and local livelihoods. OGGEV’s cage fish farming project harnesses innovative and eco-friendly fish farming methods to provide sustainable protein sources, create economic opportunities, and promote responsible aquaculture.
Why cage fish farming?
Cage fish farming involves growing fish in floating enclosures placed in natural water bodies such as lakes and rivers. This method allows for controlled fish production while minimizing the impact on the environment. It is a scalable, cost-effective, and highly productive solution that enhances food security and economic resilience for communities dependent on fisheries.
How your support makes an impact
✅ Establishing sustainable cage fish farms
We set up durable, well-designed fish cages in strategic locations along Uganda’s waterways. These farms increase fish production in a controlled environment, ensuring a steady supply of high-quality protein for local communities while reducing the strain on wild fish populations.
✅ Empowering fish farmers with training & resources
We provide hands-on training in modern aquaculture techniques, including:
- Proper cage management
- Fish breeding and feeding strategies
- Disease prevention and water quality monitoring
By equipping local farmers with knowledge and resources, we help them maximize their yields, improve livelihoods, and contribute to Uganda’s growing aquaculture sector.
✅ Promoting eco-friendly & sustainable practices
Our approach prioritizes environmental conservation by:
- Using sustainable fish feeds to prevent water pollution
- Managing fish stocking densities to avoid overpopulation
- Encouraging responsible waste management to protect aquatic ecosystems
By implementing best practices, we ensure that fish farming remains a long-term solution without harming Uganda’s precious waterways.
The bigger picture: food security & economic growth
Uganda faces increasing demand for affordable protein sources, and fish is a crucial component of many diets. Cage fish farming boosts food security by making high-quality fish more accessible while creating employment opportunities for local communities.
